Step 1 — Download Ledger Live
Open a browser and go to Ledger.com/start. Select the Ledger Live installer for your platform (Windows, macOS, Linux) or download the mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. Only download Ledger Live from Ledger’s official site to avoid phishing or tampered installers.
Step 2 — Install and Launch
- Run the downloaded installer and follow on-screen prompts.
- Launch Ledger Live and accept any OS prompts required to run the companion service.
- Choose “Get started” and select your device model (e.g., Ledger Nano X, Nano S Plus).
Step 3 — Initialize Your Device
Connect your Ledger device using the supplied cable (or pair via Bluetooth for Nano X). During setup you will:
- Create a secure PIN on the device (do not store the PIN with your seed).
- Reveal and write down your 24-word recovery phrase exactly as shown—use the supplied recovery sheet or a secure metal backup.
- Confirm the recovery phrase on the device when prompted.
Crucial: Never store your recovery phrase digitally (no photos, screenshots, or cloud storage). Ledger staff will never ask for your recovery phrase.
Step 4 — Install Apps & Add Accounts
In Ledger Live, open the Manager to install blockchain-specific apps (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). After installing apps, go to Accounts and add the accounts you want to monitor and use. When receiving crypto, always verify the receiving address on the device screen before sharing it.
Security Tips
- Keep the recovery phrase offline and in secure, geographically separated locations.
- Use a unique, strong PIN and keep it private.
- Update device firmware and Ledger Live only through official prompts in Ledger Live.
- Consider metal backups for long-term resilience against fire or water damage.
Troubleshooting
If Ledger Live doesn't detect your device: try another USB cable/port, restart Ledger Live, or reboot your computer. For Bluetooth issues (Nano X), ensure Bluetooth is enabled and permissions are granted. If a firmware update stalls, reconnect the device and follow on-screen guidance; consult the official support center if problems persist.
